My Eyes And My Hair Is an autobiography of my life, Natosha Smart Dooling.
As a young girl, I struggled from elementary school throughout college dealing with the stereotype and discrimination due to the color of my skin, eyes and the texture of my hair. As a black African American woman I was harassed every day, by my own people, mostly Black African American Women and even family members.
Growing up, I felt as though I was the only child even though I have two brothers, because they were constantly incarcerated and were unavailable when I needed them the most and as wonderful as my dad has been he was always too busy getting a handle on my brothers’ quandaries, leaving very little time for me.
And as an adult I had to make every effort to defy every stereotype and expectations of being an NBA Player’s wife on a daily basis. But having the BEST husband and best friend in the world makes it a lot easier. We understand each other and love each other unconditionally, flaws and all. We have three beautiful daughters and would have had another child but lost it through miscarriage, which brought the darkest moment in our lives.
After my husband, whom I have been with since I was fifteen, made it to the NBA, I struggled to maintain friendship as the people we grew up with weren’t use to or able to adjust with our new lifestyle.
But throughout all these emotion filled life experience, I want every body to know how good God is to my family and I.
Basically, this book is for anyone who has gone through trials and tribulations from their childhood to adulthood, Anyone who has gone through a painful experience of loosing a love one due to death or incarceration, Someone who has been mistreated because of the color of your skin, texture of your hair, the color of your eyes or just because people didn’t like the way you looked. But at the same token, this book is also about over-coming challenges of our daily endeavors, happy or sad and the more important reasons of existence, Love, Life and Family.
